Internet at El Limón

A broad consensus is emerging that high-quality telecommunications is essential for rural development. But despite much effort (and spending) a series of technical and social barriers have limited implementation to a few highly subsidized demonstration projects. EcoPartners is committed to developing an integrated, practical, and highly replicable solution.

Since 1998, we have provided El Limon with wireless Internet access, and in the following years we have helped bring five other villages on line. In 2003 broadband and telephone service was added to the El Limon system. Volunteers from the Peace Corps and United Nations work to make the Internet a primary educational resource for El Limon's children and youth. We now have the basics of a workable, low cost system in place, and are currently building out to include three nearby communities.
